Handmade Bedroom Sets: Pieces, Sizes and How to Choose

Handmade bedroom set with a carved headboard and matching nightstands

Reviewed by the Mobilia Cleopatra design team

Quick answer: A handmade bedroom set is a coordinated group of bedroom furniture (usually a bed, nightstands and a dresser or chest) whose frames are carved, finished and upholstered by hand rather than molded or printed on a production line. At Mobilia Cleopatra, the handmade sets come from our own Kleopatra Kingdom collection: solid beech frames, hand-applied gold detailing and Rococo, Neoclassical or Baroque designs. Before you compare carvings, confirm the bed size, the overall dimensions in inches and exactly which pieces the set includes.

A handmade set is a different purchase from a production bed. The carving, gilding and shaping are worked by people, so each piece carries small variations and a level of ornament machines rarely match. That is the appeal, and it is why a handmade set deserves a careful check: you are paying for craftsmanship, so you should be able to see it, name it and fit it into your room.

This guide explains what “handmade” should mean on a bedroom set, which pieces a typical set includes, how bed size and room size interact, what to know about finishes and upholstered headboards, and how to judge quality and custom options. Where we give examples, they come from the handmade bedroom pieces currently listed in our Kleopatra Kingdom handmade collection, with prices rounded and current as of October 2026.

What Makes a Bedroom Set Handmade

“Handmade” has no legal definition on furniture, so the word alone tells you little. A useful working definition is this: the decorative and finishing work that defines the piece is done by hand. That usually means hand carving on the headboard, footboard, rails and case pieces; gilding or paintwork applied by hand; and upholstery that is cut, fitted and tufted by an upholsterer. Power tools still play a role in cutting and shaping lumber in almost any workshop. What separates a handmade set is that a person shapes the ornament and finishes each surface, rather than gluing a molded resin crest onto a flat panel.

Kleopatra Kingdom is Mobilia Cleopatra’s own furniture line, a collection of roughly 700 pieces built for buyers who want ornate, old-world craftsmanship rather than mass-produced imports. According to the brand page, nearly every piece is built from solid wood, with carved frames and gilded accents finished in tones from warm gold and bronze to champagne, ivory and classic brown. The handmade bedroom pieces we list today are all made from solid beech, and their product pages describe hand-carved headboards, hand-finished gold detailing and, on the Cleopatra bed, hand-applied gilding with artisan paintwork.

Mobilia Cleopatra also carries name-brand bedroom furniture from other makers. Those sets can be excellent buys, but we do not call them handmade. If “handmade” matters to you, look for the Kleopatra Kingdom brand on the listing, or browse the handmade bedroom collection, which shows that line only.

The Pieces in a Handmade Bedroom Set

Piece counts vary, and so does what counts as a “piece.” Read the “price includes” line on any listing rather than the number in the title: a mirror may be counted on its own or with the dresser.

The bed

The bed is the anchor of the set and usually the most carved, most expensive element. In our handmade line, the beds currently listed are king beds, priced from about $4,100 to $4,950 on their own, plus the Royal Haven, a gold Baroque round bed at about $9,000. Several of them combine a carved frame with an upholstered headboard panel.

Nightstands

Most sets include two nightstands. Some handmade designs pair each nightstand with its own mirror, which adds height and ornament on both sides of the bed. Nightstands work best when their tops sit close to mattress height, so you can reach a lamp or a glass of water without stretching.

Dresser, mirror and chest

A dresser with a mirror is the most common case piece in a five-piece set. A chest adds vertical storage on a smaller footprint, which helps in rooms with less wall space. Some sets include a TV console instead of a second storage piece.

Vanity, bench and extras

Larger sets go beyond storage. They may add a vanity with a mirror and a matching chair, a bench for the foot of the bed, or a coat rack. These extras are what turn a bedroom set into a full suite, but they also take floor space, so count them against your room before you count them as value.

Here is how the three handmade sets we list today are made up, according to their product pages:

Set Style Listed contents Price (as of October 2026)
5-piece Cream Gold Blue Cleopatra Rococo King bed, TV console, dresser with mirror, 2 nightstands with mirrors About $13,400
5-piece Cream Mint Green Pure Essence Rococo King bed, TV console, dresser with mirror, 2 nightstands with mirrors About $14,600
Golden Rose Sand bedroom set Neoclassical King bed, bench, chest, 2 nightstands, coat rack, vanity with mirror, vanity chair About $17,600

Each piece in these collections is also listed individually, so you can start with the bed and add the rest later. That is often the smarter order.

Bed Sizes and Room Fit

A handmade bedroom set is a size decision before it is a carving decision. A beautifully finished headboard looks right in a photo; in a real room it fails if the bed blocks the door, crowds the closet or leaves no space to walk. Start with three numbers: the mattress size you want, the length of the wall the headboard will stand against, and the swing of every door that opens into the room, including closet doors.

Standard U.S. mattress sizes give you a starting point, but remember that a carved frame is always larger than the mattress it holds.

Mattress size Standard mattress dimensions What to keep in mind
Queen 60 x 80 in Ask whether the design can be made at this size
King (Eastern king) 76 x 80 in The size most handmade sets are built around
California king 72 x 84 in Narrower and longer than a standard king

Ornate frames add width at the posts and length at the footboard, and a sculpted crest can add a lot of height. Ask for the overall width, length and height of the assembled bed in inches, and compare the height to your ceiling. A crest that nearly touches a low ceiling makes the room feel smaller. Our product pages list component measurements, but formats vary from piece to piece, so we recommend confirming the assembled dimensions with our team before you order.

As a common rule of thumb, leave about 24 to 36 inches of walkway beside the bed and in front of the dresser so drawers open fully. Nightstands should sit roughly level with the mattress top, not tower over the pillows. If the room is tight, a king bed with two nightstands and a chest may serve you better than a full suite with a vanity and bench. A handmade frame still needs a mattress that fits it, so confirm the interior size first.

Finishes, Carving and Upholstered Headboards

Finish is where handmade bedroom sets look most different from mass-produced ones, and where they deserve the closest look. In our handmade bedroom pieces, the frame finishes currently listed are cream and gold, cream with gold and blue paint, golden rose, and gold. Gold detailing is described as hand-finished or hand-applied, and on the Cleopatra designs as gold leaf highlighting the carved elements.

Hand gilding and paintwork have a character of their own. You may see slight variations in tone from one carved leaf to the next, or a softer edge where gold meets paint. That is normal for hand finishing and part of what you are paying for. What you should not see is gold that flakes at the edges, paint that pools in the recesses of the carving, or a finish that looks identical to the millimeter across every piece, which can point to a printed or sprayed decorative layer.

Upholstered headboards

Many handmade beds combine a carved wooden frame with an upholstered headboard panel. The Pure Essence king bed pairs cream and gold carving with mint green upholstery, the Golden Rose Sand bed uses golden rose upholstered elements, and the Royal Haven round bed is described with premium upholstery and soft, velvety textures. An upholstered panel softens a heavily carved frame and makes the bed more comfortable to sit up in.

When you compare upholstered headboards, ask what the fabric is, not just its color, since fiber content affects wear and cleaning. Check that tufting is even, seams run straight along curves, and the fabric sits taut around the carved surround. If you want a different fabric, our product pages note that finish, size and fabric can be made to order on these designs.

Repeat the tone, not every ornament

A full matching set is easy to style, but it can overwhelm a smaller room. If every piece carries a carved crest, the eye has nowhere to rest. Let the bed lead, repeat the finish and color on the nightstands and dresser, and keep the walls, bedding and window treatments calmer. Styles: Rococo, Neoclassical, Baroque and Palace-Scale Pieces

Handmade bedroom sets are almost always traditional in style, because hand carving is what those styles depend on. Our handmade bedroom pieces currently fall into three style groups.

Rococo is the largest group. It is known for asymmetrical curves, shell and scroll motifs, and a lighter, more playful feel than earlier French styles. The Cleopatra and Pure Essence sets sit here, with sweeping lines, gold detailing and soft cream grounds. If you want to see more Rococo designs together, browse our Rococo bedroom sets.

Neoclassical design is more restrained and architectural, drawing on classical columns, straight legs and balanced symmetry. The Golden Rose Sand set represents this side of the collection, with ornament organized along clean lines.

Baroque is the boldest of the three: heavier carving, deeper relief and a sense of scale. The Royal Haven round bed is the clearest example. Our brand page also describes palace-style statement pieces built for grand-scale rooms, and that is the right way to think about a bed like this. It suits a large primary suite where it can stand as the room’s centerpiece, not a modest bedroom where it would crowd everything else.

Both the Rococo and Neoclassical looks trace back to French furniture traditions. If the French look is your main goal, our guide to French style bedroom sets covers Louis XV, Louis XVI and Provincial bedrooms in more depth.

What about Victorian? The brand page lists Victorian among the wider collection’s traditions, but none of the handmade bedroom pieces currently listed are Victorian. We also carry new Victorian-style bedroom sets from other makers; they are not part of the handmade line. Our Victorian bedroom design guide covers the colors, textiles and layout of that look.

How to Judge Handmade Quality

These checks apply to handmade bedroom furniture from any maker, including ours. Most can also be asked about by phone.

  • Name the wood. “Hardwood” is not an answer; a species is. Our handmade beds are listed as solid beech, a dense, fine-grained hardwood that carves well. Ask the same question of any set you compare.
  • Look for solid wood signs. On a solid piece, the grain usually continues around edges and corners, and the underside looks like the same wood as the top. A thin, uniform band along an edge or a repeating pattern suggests veneer or a printed wrap. Veneer is acceptable on flat panels; it is not a substitute for solid wood in bed rails and posts.
  • Check that the carving is part of the wood. Hand carving has depth, undercuts and small irregularities. Molded ornament tends to be shallow, perfectly repeated and sometimes lighter in weight than the frame it sits on.
  • Test the structure. Push gently on the headboard and footboard. A well-built bed should not rack or creak. Ask how the rails attach to the posts and make sure the hardware bolts tight.
  • Open every drawer. On nightstands, dressers and chests, drawers should glide smoothly and sit square. Dovetail joints on drawer boxes are a good sign of careful casework.
  • Inspect the finish up close. Look into the recesses of the carving. Gold and paint should be even without pooling, flaking or bare patches.
  • Get the details in writing. Your quote should list each piece, the wood species, the finish and fabric, and the overall dimensions in inches. Blank lines mean the order is not finished.

Custom Options for a Handmade Bedroom Set

One of the strongest reasons to choose a handmade set is that it can often be adjusted. The Kleopatra Kingdom brand page states that every item in the collection can be custom-made to your size, wood finish and upholstery, and that nothing in the collection is pulled from a warehouse. Our handmade bed listings repeat this: finish, size and fabric can be made to order, and the Cleopatra king bed page notes customizable sizing.

For commissions that go further, our design-your-own furniture service follows a set process:

  1. Consultation. Bring your room measurements and design ideas, or share inspiration photos and sketches.
  2. Drawings and 3D models. Our designers prepare detailed drawings and 3D renderings, and a scale model or full-size mock-up can be built if needed.
  3. Materials and finishes. The custom page lists premium solid woods (oak, maple, walnut and mahogany), custom stains, lacquers or paints, and fabrics from natural linens to rich velvets for headboards. Hardware and details can include brass handles, carved wood accents, metal inlays or custom motifs. Ask which of these options apply to a specific Kleopatra Kingdom design.
  4. Matching case goods. Nightstands and dressers can be sized and styled to your needs, which is useful when an alcove or a window limits the space beside the bed.
  5. Proposal and approval. You receive a proposal with renderings, dimensions, material samples and color options. Your order is confirmed only after you approve the quotation.

Typical bedroom requests are a lower headboard for a low ceiling, a different fabric or frame finish, or resized nightstands. Write them down before your consultation so the drawings start from your room.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a handmade bedroom set?

It is a coordinated set of bedroom furniture, typically a bed, nightstands and a dresser or chest, whose carving, finishing and upholstery are done by hand. At Mobilia Cleopatra, handmade sets come from our Kleopatra Kingdom line, built on solid beech frames with hand-finished gold detailing.

What pieces are included in a handmade bedroom set?

It depends on the set. Our five-piece handmade sets include a king bed, a TV console, a dresser with mirror and two nightstands with mirrors. Our larger Golden Rose Sand set adds a chest, a vanity with mirror, a vanity chair, a bench and a coat rack. Always read the “price includes” line on the listing.

Is a handmade bed always better than a stock bed?

No. A well-made stock bed that fits your room can be a better buy than a handmade bed that does not. Handmade makes sense when you want hand carving, gilding or custom sizing that production furniture cannot offer.

What sizes do handmade bedroom sets come in?

The handmade beds we currently list are king beds, plus a Baroque round bed. Product pages note that size can be made to order, so ask our team whether a design can be built for a queen or California king mattress, and confirm the assembled dimensions in inches.

Do I need to buy the whole matching set?

No. Each piece in our handmade collections is also listed individually. Many buyers start with the bed, live with it in the room, and then add nightstands or a dresser in the same finish.

How can I tell if bedroom furniture is really handmade?

Look for carving with real depth and slight irregularities, grain that runs around edges, and gilding with natural variation. Ask the seller to name the wood and which steps are done by hand.

Can a handmade headboard be made in a different fabric or height?

Often, yes. Our handmade bed listings state that finish, size and fabric can be made to order. For larger changes, such as a lower headboard, the design-your-own process starts with drawings you approve before the order is confirmed.

Choosing Your Handmade Bedroom Set

The best handmade bedroom set is the one that fits your room first and your taste second. Start with the mattress size, the wall length and the door clearances. Confirm the overall dimensions of the bed in inches and compare its height to your ceiling. Read exactly which pieces are included, and decide whether you need all of them or would rather start with the bed and two nightstands.

Then check the craftsmanship you are paying for: the wood species, the depth of the carving, the gilding and the headboard fabric. Let one style lead, whether Rococo, Neoclassical or a Baroque statement bed, and repeat its finish rather than every ornament.

If you would like help comparing designs, checking dimensions or discussing a custom size, finish or fabric, call our team at (909) 999-1442. We can walk you through the current handmade bedroom pieces and what can be made to order for your space.
